Room and Accommodation

  • Provide a Comfortable Bedroom:
    • A clean, well-maintained room with a comfortable bed, storage (wardrobe, drawers, or shelving), and a desk or table with adequate lighting for study.
    • Free Wi-Fi for personal and academic use.
    • Weekly laundry service or access to laundry facilities.
  • Access to Shared Spaces: Students should feel at home with access to communal areas such as the living room, dining room, or kitchen.
  • Room Cleanliness: Ensure the room is clean and ready before the student’s arrival and offer guidance on tidying during their stay.

Meal Plans: Flexibility to Suit Your Household

You have the flexibility to decide which meal plans you offer based on your household's routine and preferences. Students will only be placed with you if the agreed plan matches what you’re able to provide:

  • Self-Catering: The host doesn’t provide any food. Students use the kitchen facilities to cook their own meals, with storage for food.
  • Bed & Breakfast: A light continental breakfast, such as toast, cereal, fruit, juice, and tea or coffee.
  • Half Board: A continental breakfast and a cooked evening meal.
  • Full Board: Includes breakfast, a packed lunch, and an evening meal.

Catering to Special Requirements

Before accepting a booking, you’ll have the opportunity to review each student’s profile, including any dietary needs or allergies (e.g., vegetarian, halal, gluten-free), to see if you’re comfortable accommodating these.

The Joy of Shared Meals

Hosts are encouraged to share evening meals with their students as part of the family. Not only is this an opportunity for cultural exchange, but also a chance to make the student feel truly welcomed and included. Sitting down to eat together creates a warm, family-like atmosphere where students can practise their English, share their experiences, and build meaningful connections with you.

Safety and Compliance

  • Fire and Gas Safety:
    • Complete an annual fire risk assessment – PLUS will send you a comprehensive guide to help you carry this out.
    • Maintain a valid Gas Safety Certificate.
    • Show students fire exit routes and provide access to fire safety equipment, such as smoke alarms and fire blankets.
  • Safeguarding and DBS Checks: All household members aged 18+ must have an enhanced DBS certificate (or PVG in Scotland). PLUS will guide you through this process to make it as stress-free as possible.
  • Student Welfare:
    • Be observant for signs of homesickness or stress and encourage open communication.
    • PLUS staff are available 24/7 for you to contact if you have concerns about a student’s well-being.
    • Notify PLUS of any absences, illness, or incidents affecting the student.

What Makes a Successful Host?

  1. Warm and Welcoming: Students thrive in an environment where they feel part of the household.
  2. Flexible and Patient: Adapt to the needs of young people adjusting to a new culture.
  3. Supportive and Observant: Offer guidance and monitor their well-being without being intrusive.
